HilurlipĀ®

What is it?

HilurlipĀ® is an active designed for lip products like lip masks, lip oils, lip butters, and lip glosses. It is made by Lipotecā„¢, which is part of Lubrizol.

According to marketing materials from Lipotecā„¢:

“HilurlipĀ® functional ingredient WS is an advanced way of vehiculization of particles of sodium hyaluronate to enhance its penetration and efficacy, especially designed for producing a long-term boosting effect on the lips. It plumps, redefines and minimizes fine vertical lines and keeps lip contour in shape, providing a more youthful and appealing look. This product can be incorporated in lip care products. To achieve a plumping effect, its use is recommended in water-free formulations.”

The active ingredients in HilurlipĀ® are 1% Sodium Hyaluronate and 0.05% Tripeptide-1.

Lipotecā„¢ recommends 2%; Lotion Crafter recommends 1–3%.

Nothing noticeable, especially in finished products.

Why do we use it in formulations?

We include HilurlipĀ® in our formulations for its lip plumping and anti-aging effects.

Do you need it?

No, but it is a really fun lip active, and a lovely addition to your DIY pantry if you like making fancy lip products.

Refined or unrefined?

HilurlipĀ® only exists as a refined product.

Strengths

Lip plumping and anti-aging effects.

Weaknesses

It’s not widely available (I haven’t found it outside the US as of 2025) and it’s pretty expensive.

Alternatives & Substitutions

The closest alternative I can recommend is some sort of “oleo hyaluronic acid“; these products are typically microspheres of hyaluronic acid dispersed in a base of hydrogenated oil.

How to Work with It

Recommended for use in anhydrous (water-free) lip formulatoins; add at the end of manufacturing process. HilurlipĀ® is not recommended for stick lip products like lip balms and lipsticks that would require the addition of HilurlipĀ® at a higher temperature.
