Do you need to test and adjust the pH of your formulations before you add your preservative?

by | May 8, 2026

🗳️ From The Question Box: “Hi. Some formulations say to add the preservative last after pH adjustment and in some others you add the preservative and then you adjust pH. For example while making a surfactant product I find formulations that say add preservative and last pH adjust. So at the moment you add it, the pH can be on the higher side especially if you have used some kind of glucoside and be outside the preservatives range. Will that ruin preservation or since you adjust the pH afterwards it will be okay? Thanks for everything!” – Danae
